Medical eye care
Did you know that we check more than just your vision at a routine exam? We check the eye pressure, visual field (peripheral vision) and take a retinal photo of the back of your eyes. We do this to screen for eye disease that creates poor vision (e.g. diabetes, glaucoma, and macular degeneration).
Currently 45% of all patients with diabetes will suffer from some form of diabetic retinopathy. And over 14 million adults over 40 are predicted to develop diabetic changes to the eyes (i.e. diabetic retinopathy) by 2050. Diabetes is the #1 cause of preventable blindness in Americans aged 20-74.
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, and affects nearly 3 million Americans, but only half have regular eye exams. There is no cure for glaucoma at this time. However, 90% of people treated can stop the progression of peripheral vision loss.
Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of adult vision loss in the US, and affects 1 in 8 people over age 60. Those numbers climb to 1 in 3 people over the age of 75 will develop macular degeneration.
